"I don't think this is a good idea."

John gritted his teeth, frustratedly. "Come on Elizabeth, it's taken me two months to get you in here, I'm not going to argue with you for the next half hour."

She gave him an embarrassed look. "Can't I do it with Teyla instead?"

John rolled his eyes, "We've gone over this. She's too small."

"But you want me to be able to hold my own against men, right?" she asked trying not to sound too desperate, "Teyla does that.."

"Because she trains against men," John answered firmly. "You need to train against me, Lorne or Ronon."

"So why can't I..."

"Because Lorne's busy, and I while he might be a great guy, Ronon acts on impulse and reflex, and I don't trust him not to hurt you if you accidentally hurt him," John told her with a sigh. "I don't get what the problem is here."

"No problem..." Elizabeth muttered.

"Okay," John smiled, "Let's get started then."

Elizabeth stopped for a moment to catch her breath. Half an hour into this training session and she'd worked up a sweat. John had had her going over basic combat training, blocking his advances, manoeuvring out of the way of him. Her arms were aching and her legs felt heavy.

"Okay, now I want you to focus on the main goal of this whole exercise." John insisted.

"Oh... no. No, I'm not going to kick you there." Elizabeth gave him a horrified look.

John rolled his eyes, "Elizabeth, this is the whole aim of the exercise. For you to be able to defend yourself against a man in the most effective way possible. Short of eye gouging him, this is the best way to do it."

She stared at the ground, embarrassed and uncertain.

"Elizabeth," John said firmly, gripping her arm. "I'm going to block you. You won't even make contact. It's more about the leg action than anything else."

Elizabeth looked at him uncertainly, before taking a deep breath. "Okay." she murmured.

"OKay?"

"Yeah."

"Alright, let's go."

Elizabeth clamped a hand over her mouth as she watched John fall to the floor in obvious pain.

"Oh, God, I'm so sorry!" she blurted out, "I thought you were going to be faster than that... like the other times..."

"It's okay," he muttered breathlessly.

"No, no it's not," she dropped to the floor beside him, rubbing his back in what she hoped was a soothing, apologetic way.

"It's fine," John insisted, "at least we know your aim is good..." he tried to joke.

"Should I get Doctor Beckett?" she asked, sounding flustered, "I think I should get Carson down here."

"NO!"

"But John.."

"NO!"

"Okay..."

"Promise me something," John sighed.

"Anything."

"You won't tell anyone about this... I'd never live it down."

Elizabeth smiled, linking an arm through his and trying to haul him to his feet, "Promise," she answered. "the last thing we need is to give Rodney something else to tease you about.."

"Thanks.." John said, and Elizabeth wasn't sure if it was for her promise of secrecy, or her help getting to his feet.

John took a deep breath, and followed her to the door.

Pain or no pain, right now he was glad he'd insisted she not train against Ronon.

He didn't like to think of how the big man would have reacted to that move.
