Doctor Elizabeth Weir stood on the balcony overlooking the city of Atlantis. The sun had just gone down and there was a chill in the air.

Even now after over a year, the beauty of the city took her breath away. She had come out here to think, so much had happened over the past few weeks that her feet had barley had chance to touch the ground.

There was the Wraith attack on the city, the loss of so many, Lt Ford becoming ill with the Wraith enzyme and then promptly disappearing through the gate, Rodney having to share his body with another consciousness and if that wasn’t enough, the constant perils that her number one team had had to face recently. Almost all their missions had ended in a rescue of some sort of late.

She needed to clear her head, something was bothering her but she couldn’t put her finger on it. She was so tired that she couldn’t think straight, but at the same time, she couldn’t sleep because her mind wouldn’t shut down.

She had contemplated going to Dr Becket and asking him to knock her out, but she thought she’d try a nice walk and some fresh air before bed first.

A swish of the doors behind her let her know that someone had joined her.
She tried to suppress a shiver, the nights on Atlantis were getting colder, suggesting that winter was approaching.

“You shouldn’t come out here anymore without a coat on.” Admonished a familiar voice. “Or at least wear some real clothes!”

Elizabeth turned and gave a half smile to LT Colonel John Sheppard, looking down at her attire she realised she was in her pyjama’s and a flimsy dressing gown. She couldn’t stop herself from blushing from head to toe.
‘But why am I blushing?’ She thought. ‘I’m covered up, I’m decent for goodness sake! What’s wrong with me?’

“I . . . er . . . I needed some air, having trouble sleeping.” She stuttered in reply.

“Ahh I see.”

He stepped closer to her making her heart beat faster, what the hell was wrong with her? She felt like a school girl experiencing her first . . . CRUSH! Oh God, oh no this can’t be happening it can’t! But if he just stood a little closer perhaps she could . . . NO! . . . stop it no no no!

“It’s all very well getting some fresh air Elizabeth but if you go and get pneumonia then who’ll look after everyone?” He took off his jacket and placed it around her shoulders, rubbing his hands up and down her arms affectionately. “There, you’re freezing!” He stated as he cupped her hands and started rubbing them too.

“Well you are in charge too John, I’m sure you’d manage without me for a while, you’d look after everyone just fine.”

“Yeah but who’d look after me?” He asked before blowing into her hands.

Elizabeth stopped and looked at him. On an ordinary day, his statement would just have been another John Sheppard witty comment. But tonight was different, today was no ordinary day, he knew it and so did she. So much had changed in the last few weeks, relationships included. People had been brought closer, friendships made stronger.

John looked up to meet Elizabeth’s gaze, feelings were exchanged without a word being spoken. John pulled away, realising where they were.
“You know, if you really can’t sleep, you can always come round to my place and borrow my copy of War and Peace.

Elizabeth smiled as he turned and walked towards the door.
“I might just do that.” She replied as he disappeared through the door.

Elizabeth stood outside John’s room, hoping she correctly interpreted what he was saying earlier on the balcony. That him offering his copy of War and Peace was an invitation to his room where they would have more privacy. So much was going through her mind, was she doing the right thing? She decided to bite the bullet as it were and pressed the chime for his door.

“Come in.” Came John’s voice as the door opened at his command.

“Hey” She whispered as she walked in and the door closed behind her.

John walked towards her quickly and reached her in seconds.
“I didn’t know if you’d come.” He said on a sigh as he swooped down and kissed her passionately.

After what felt to them like hours, they broke for air but still held on to each other. Elizabeth’s eyes filled with tears at his intense stare.
“John I need you.” Was all she could verbalise.

“I know, it’s ok it’s ok.” He said soothingly as he kissed her face comfortingly.
“You don’t always have to be so strong, it’s ok.”

“John I think I love you, is that wrong?” She asked.

“Well if it is then I’m wrong too because I love you Elizabeth, so much!”
He confessed as he leaned in for another kiss, this one more loving and gentle.
“Come on.” He said, leading her towards the bed. “I think we both need some sleep, we’ll talk tomorrow.”

As Elizabeth lay there in John’s bed, spooned up against him, she felt a great weight lifted from her. Whatever else happened, she had here and now, she had tonight and she suddenly realised as John’s arousal pressed against her that if something were to happen to them tomorrow, then there were two more things that she wanted to have done. She turned to face him and cupped his cheek.

“John” She whispered.

“I know, I know, I’m sorry I’m trying to make it go away.” He whispered back as a blush slowly crept up his face.

Elizabeth smiled, that was one, now for the other. She reached down and gently stroked him through his pants.

“Ahhhh . . . er . . . Elizabeth, that’s so not helping matters.” He stuttered.

“You want me to stop?” She asked innocently.

“Well I didn’t say that exactly.” He replied.

She leaned forward and licked his ear before whispering, “I want you John.”

“Well I can’t argue with that now can I?” He said
He was more than happy to oblige.
