Elizabeth Weir was frustrated. Two months into her job at the SGC, her wish to go to Atlantis was granted. Sadly, it just happened to coincide with a week-long mission for John, and it was highly unlikely she'd see him at all.
She sat in the lab, going over some translations with Dr Zelenka. He'd been excited to see her, engulfing her in a hug the moment she arrived and dragging her off to his lab to get to work.
Sitting in the lab, in a standard Atlantis uniform, with her hair now cut to a manageable shoulder length, Elizabeth almost felt that she'd never been away. Some of the staff had changed. People had died, left the program, joined the program..
In a way it was familiar. In another way, it was like coming home to find another family living in your house.

"Dr Weir."
Elizabeth turned, coming face to face with Samantha Carter for the first time in months.
"Colonel Carter, it's good to see you."
Sam smiled at her "It's good to have you here. How are you and Dr Zelenka going with the device?"
"Great," Elizabeth smiled, looking to Zelenka "we're making some good progress, aren't we Radek?"
Zelenka nodded, called out something in Czech to another scientist who answered in the same language and then wandered off.
"So you've met the whole team here then?" Sam asked.
"There are a lot of new faces," Elizabeth admitted.
Sam nodded, "We should talk about getting you somewhere to stay for the next few days."
"Oh, I'll be fine in John's room," Elizabeth insisted.
"Of course," Sam said "I don't know why I didn't think of that... so show me this ring."
Elizabeth held her left hand out.
Sam Carter looked stunned. "Wow. That's a serious diamond."
"I know. He has this theory that since he can't spend his money here, he should do some serious spending when he's on Earth..."
"Lucky you," Sam still couldn't take her eyes off the engagement ring "that thing is incredible."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Elizabeth entered John's room at the end of a long day. It was neater than she'd expected, given the fact he hadn't known she'd be arriving. His guitar was leaned against one wall, the bed made, but a little messy from where he'd obviously been sitting on it before he left on his mission.
She changed into John's t-shirt, and slipped into his bed. It was soft, warm, and smelled of him. Elizabeth found herself falling asleep more easily than she had since the day he'd left Earth.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Elizabeth had the worst headache she'd had in a long time. She sat in Dr Zelenka's lab, head in her hands, eyes closed.
She'd felt unwell for a couple of days. Aches and pains, a cough that wouldn't go away. If she didn't know better, she'd think she had the flu.
All in all, she felt extremely rundown.
"Elizabeth," Radek whispered, "are you alright?"
"I will be..." she insisted. "Migraine..."
"We should take a break," he insisted. "Dr Matthews," he turned to Jennie, who'd just joined their work that morning "could you get Elizabeth some tea?"
"Oh, no, don't go out of your way," Elizabeth insisted, "I'll be fine. I just need to rest my eyes for a moment."
"Elizabeth, if you end up in the infirmary, Colonel Sheppard will never forgive me. We'll take a break. An hour. We can always work a little later tonight."
Elizabeth smiled. "Thank you, Radek."
"Think nothing of it," he whispered. "Go and lie down for an hour. I'll call you when it's time to come back."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"So she was the leader before Colonel Carter," Jennie queried.
"She was. For the first three years of our mission. A very popular leader she was, too." Zelenka informed her with a smile.
"What's the story now?"
"She's based at the SGC," Zelenka explained. "she's our foremost expert in Ancient. She's to be called in when we need some help."
"And why would Colonel Sheppard never forgive you if she ended up in the infirmary?" Jennie asked, thinking she knew the answer before it was given.
"She's his fiance." Zelenka told her "He was fiercely protective of her before they were together... I can only imagine what he'd be like now."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Elizabeth's head was pounding. She'd taken a shower, and then crawled into John's bed, pulling the covers almost over her head.
When she woke, it was four hours later, and she felt no better.
Zelenka had spoken with Colonel Carter, expressing his concern, and they'd decided not to wake her.
She sat up slowly, feeling feverish, and mortified that they'd let her sleep for so long. Elizabeth quickly dressed in her uniform and made her way slowly to Zelenka's lab.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Zelenka took one look at Elizabeth, and ordered Dr Matthews to call Dr Keller.
"Tell her to get down here immediately" he said, sitting Elizabeth down at the desk.
"I'm fine, Radek," Elizabeth insisted. "Just a little dizzy from my headache..." she coughed a bit "Why didn't you call me after an hour?"
Zelenka rested his hand against her forehead "I felt you needed the rest, and it seems I was right. You're not well."
"I'm fine," Elizabeth insisted.
Zelenka gave her a disbelieving look "We'll let Dr Keller decide that."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Keller had immediately insisted Elizabeth go to the infirmary for supervised rest. Right now she was lying in a bed, somewhere between asleep and awake.
"So what's the verdict?" Sam Carter asked.
"Believe it or not," Keller answered, "what we have here is a simple case of measles. You can see the spots starting to appear behind her ears and on her neck."
"Measles?" Sam was stunned. "How many women in their 30s get measles?"
"The ones who didn't get measles as a kid are most certainly prone to it. She needs bedrest, at least for a couple of days. We have to keep her hydrated, maybe some calamine lotion..It's pretty simple stuff, but I'd like to have her here for a while."
Sam smiled "Okay, you know best. If she asks for any work to do, tell her over my dead body."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Jennie Matthews entered the infirmary with a cup of Athosian tea, "Dr Keller," she said "I thought Dr Weir might like some tea. If she's up to it."
The doctor nodded. "It can't hurt. May actually make her feel a little better. She's over there," she motioned towards a curtain, drawn around a bed.
Dr Matthews smiled, and walked over to Elizabeth's bed. "Dr Weir?"
"Hmmmm."
Dr Matthews made her way past the curtain. Elizabeth was clearly still feverish. "I bought you some tea. I thought it'd make you feel better."
"Thank you," Elizabeth answered softly.
"So that's some engagement ring," Jennie said, "he must be an amazing guy."
"Mmmm. He is."
"Do I know him?"
"Colonel Sheppard," Elizabeth whispered, before breaking into another bout of coughing.
"John?" Jennie laughed softy, causing Elizabeth to turn to her. "You're engaged to John? We should compare notes some time.." she said, as got up to leave.
Elizabeth stared after her, stunned and confused.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
John Sheppard's team arrived home two days earlier than scheduled, with a great negotiation behind it. "Hey guys, we're home." he called out as they stepped through the 'gate.
"Welcome back," Colonel Carter called. "I take it things went well."
"Things went brilliantly," John said with a grin, "Teyla, tell the Colonel how brilliant you were in the negotiations."
Teyla smiled "We were quite successful, Colonel Carter."
"That's great," Carter told her, "So why don't we meet in an hour? John, can I see you for a second?"
John watched as his team members went their separate ways, then turned to Carter, "Sam, what can I do for you?"
"It's actually what I can do for you. Dr Weir has been here for the past few days."
John broke into a grin "Is she still here?"
"Yes," Sam took a deep breath, "She's in the infirmary."
Before she could explain further, John had taken off at a run towards the infirmary.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"Don't look at me." Elizabeth wailed plaintively.
"'Lizabeth," John said softly, trying to lower the sheet she had covering her face.
"I'm hideous, John, don't look at me..."
John laughed "Sweetie, it's just some spots, let me see."
She slowly allowed him to lower the sheet, looking at him miserably.
"You're gorgeous," he told her, "A little redder and spottier than usual, but still gorgeous."
She thumped him lightly on the arm, and he laughed at her.
"It's not funny," she insisted. "I feel like crap, I look like crap, this is not how I imagined seeing you again."
"I'll take seeing you anyway you come. Spots or no spots." he said, trying to find a spot free patch of skin and kissing her forehead.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Jennie Matthews watched as John Sheppard gave Elizabeth Weir a soft kiss, brushed a hand through her hair, pulled the covers up around her shoulders and left her bedside.
She was sleeping, Jennie could tell. John had apparently been there for an hour when Jennie arrived again with a cup of Athosian tea.
She quickly ducked out of the way when John walked into Keller's office, told her he had a meeting with Carter, and that he'd be back as soon as possible.
Jennie smiled to herself, entering Keller's office once John was well out of sight. "I have some tea for Dr Weir," she said.
The doctor glanced over at the sleeping Elizabeth Weir, "Maybe later," she suggested, "I'd rather let her rest while she can."
Jennie nodded, leaving the infirmary to plan her next move.
