It wasn’t until the very end that he heard her scream, the very definition of ‘blood-curdling’, cries of rage, pain, and terror clashing simultaneously in frantic discord.
He pressed his cheek against the mesh network of the cell door, hard enough to leave angry bruises on his already beaten skin.
They hauled her, naked and limp, down the hall, away from his cell, a tell-tale trickle of blood dripping from between her legs.
He screamed her name, willing her to look back at him, needing that reassurance.
But she couldn’t, and was gone.
