She was so tired of them and couldn’t wait for this day to end, she knew that soon her mother would break down and she didn’t want anyone else to be around when this happened it was a private family matter. But what really irked her most was that everyone kept coming up to her and saying things about what a poor child she was to have lost him at the young age of sixteen, she hated when they said this. These people had no idea what they were talking and were probably just saying things like that because it was expected of them and she was sick and tired of hearing it. Elizabeth had been hearing everyone apologize for her loss for the last few days and she was sick and tired of hearing it that she would have stood up on a chair and told them to shut up but knew that the outburst wouldn’t do anyone any good. Besides that she knew that they would just pat her on the head or shoulder and say that her outcry was due to the stress of loosing her father.
Elizabeth looked over at her mother at the gravesite and saw her calm demeanor and that in turn calmed her down and she knew that she would have to hold on just a little bit longer and then she and her mother could be by themselves. They had both said goodbye to her father just before he died and she had also done it just prior to her being sent off to college. Elizabeth remembered how proudly her father beamed when she informed him what university she had been accepted to and how he made her promise to always do her best in school even when he was gone. That was one promise that Elizabeth would never break.
Of course Elizabeth hated the idea that she only got to spend sixteen years of her short life with her father but they had been wonderful and charmed years as far as she was concerned. Even when he announced that he had cancer, her family always made the best of things even during his days of Chemo. The only good thing to come from his death was the fact that he wasn’t suffering any more and that was one thing they had discussed before he passed on. She had been struggling with tears all this time but would not show any emotion in front of these people she would let her emotions loose later in private or with her mother but not now.
Later that evening after everyone had left, Elizabeth excused the staff so they could have some time off from all of the funeral guest mayhem and so they too could have some time off to remember her father. Elizabeth had just settled down in her room, forgoing dinner as did her mother and was about to call her roommate, Jenny when she heard a muffled cry. Walking into her parent’s bedroom she spotted her mother still in her black dress clutching the pillow he slept on to her chest as she openly wept for his loss. Elizabeth got up on the bed behind her mother and held her tight until she could feel that her mother had finally fallen asleep, it had been a hard day on the two of them but for now her mother needed to sleep.
Elizabeth walked into her bedroom, changed clothes and was about to get into bed when something inside stirred in her, so she turned and walked over to the window and pulled back the curtains to gaze at the stars outside her window. It was much harder to see the stars now because of all of the light pollution but she could see them and in a way it seemed as if they looked exactly like she remembered that night after she and her father came home from seeing Pinocchio. Tears filled her eyes as she looked out and chose the brightest star and made a wish, wishing that her father could see them and know that they would be okay. She opened her eyes and saw another star and with the tears in her eyes it seemed to twinkle so she closed her eyes again and made another wish, just like she did that night with her father.
She felt warmth deep inside of her and she just knew that it was her father assuring her in his own way that he was there with her and to let her know that he was okay now. Elizabeth smiled up at the stars once again and then let the curtains close then crawled into bed, she would call her roommate tomorrow and let her knew when she was returning to school.
As she slept again a bright light appeared in the room and Janus once again walked over to her bed and kissed her tenderly on the side of her head, it seemed to allow Elizabeth to relax and fall into a deeper sleep. He looked at her and smiled knowing that she was once again dreaming of the castle by the water and the wild hair man standing by her side, only this time he had not placed the idea in her mind, it was the same dream that she had been having off and on throughout most of her life. Janus smiled because he knew that one day she would fulfill that dream and be in her castle but for now Janus would just have to wait, so he again became a bright light and floated up and out of the Weir household.
A few days later Elizabeth was met at the airport by her roommate, Jenny, who took her out to eat before they returned to the dorm to study all night long. Jenny had been kind enough to get the work assignments to Elizabeth during the three weeks she had been gone so she wouldn’t fall behind in school. She was going to keep her promise to her father and do her best in school and make him proud of everything that she could accomplish. Jenny was eighteen years old, only two years older than Elizabeth but the two got along quite well and were best friends throughout college and even into grad school. Elizabeth had graduated early from college but went on to grad school in the same university so she and Jenny continued to room together until Jenny graduated and moved away and Elizabeth finished getting her Ph.D. just a few months after Jenny left school at the young age of twenty-one.
~~Eight years later~~
“EJ please tell me that you’re kidding, surly you’re not going to accept,” Jenny almost yelled into the receiver.
That one statement put Elizabeth on the defensive and immediately she started discussing the merits of marrying Dr. Simon Wallace with her best friend. It upset Elizabeth that Jenny never seemed to accept Simon especially since he was really a nice guy and she knew that she and Simon could be happy together. Jenny had heard Elizabeth said that they could be happy together and asked Elizabeth why she didn’t say that they were happy now only when Elizabeth said that they were very happy right now Jenny retorted that if they were really that happy then why wasn’t there glee in her voice.
Just then someone walked into the office and Elizabeth informed Jenny that she would call her back later someone just walked in the door. Elizabeth was happy for the interruption because it hurt her that her best friend didn’t like her fiancé and wondered if it was that they had not spent much time together. Jenny had a habit of forming an instant like or dislike of people and although she was seldom wrong in her feeling about people, Elizabeth believed that Jenny was totally wrong when it came to Simon.
They later spoke and Elizabeth had convinced Jenny to come spend some time in town and get to know Simon and then she could see for herself that Elizabeth was truly happy with Simon. So Elizabeth met Jenny at the airport and the first night was girl’s night out so they went out and had a couple of drinks and dinner but when they returned to Elizabeth’s home that was when Jenny quickly disappeared into the bedroom and came back out a few minutes later with the DVD of Pinocchio.
At the end of the movie both women had tears in their eyes and there was an empty bottle of wine on the table. Jenny then escorted Elizabeth to a window and pulled back the curtain and asked her to look outside and then to make a wish. At first Elizabeth tried to laugh it off but Jenny got very serious and told Elizabeth to make a wish and so she did and when she opened her eyes she saw Jenny looking at her with a question on her face.
Elizabeth asked what was wrong and Jenny asked if she made the same wish she did when she was a child with her father and Elizabeth just smiled and said she wasn’t telling. Jenny told Elizabeth to keep the image of the man she had seen in her dreams in mind and asked her if Simon was the same man she had been dreaming of all these years. Elizabeth cringed wishing she had never told Jenny about her childhood dreams knowing that one day Jenny would toss it back in her face, but that was a dream and Dr. Simon Wallace loved her and they were going to be married. At the end of the visit Jenny was at least glad that she had talked Elizabeth into a longer engagement period because deep in her heart she knew that he wasn’t the right man for her EJ (Elizabeth Jane is the nickname Jenny gave to Elizabeth).
Two years later Elizabeth and Simon purchased a house in the DC area which would give them much more room than the townhouse where they now lived in Alexandria just outside of DC. The purchasing of the house was the last step they would take before getting married and much to Elizabeth’s surprise Jenny didn’t object when Elizabeth mentioned she would be getting married soon. For too long Jenny had been crusading against the Elizabeth marrying Simon and now her lack of object made Elizabeth think Jenny finally accepted that Simon was the right man for her.
However, the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry and that is exactly what happened next.
A black limousine pulled up to the curb as Elizabeth was hailing a cab but seeing limousines was common in this area, but it stopping and the man in the limo calling out her name wasn’t commonplace. But what really confused Elizabeth was that the man calling her name was the Vice President of the United States.
An ending of sorts.
